Since it's manifestos week and all the parties present their manifestos to the public, let's see what they say about the urgently needed leasehold reform:

Labour states:

"Labour will also take decisive action to improve building safety, including through regulation, to ensure we never again see a repeat of the Grenfell fire. We will review how to better protect leaseholders from costs and take steps to accelerate the pace of remediation across the country. We ...

The Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act is now a law. Let's see what it has for us:

  • Allowing for lease terms to be extended by 990 years for both houses and flats.
  • Elimination of the two-year ownership requirement for leaseholders wishing to extend their lease or purchase their freehold. This opens up enfranchisement options to a wider class of tenants.
  • Making it cheaper for tenants to buy their freehold by requiring each side to pay their own c...

Many thanks to the Guardian for featuring my fellow leaseholders and I in the leasehold nightmare challenges we found ourselves over the last 6 years. In this nightmare we have had everything - from low quality construction to fraudulent freeholder, incompetent managing agents who couldn’t care less, to even violence by the freeholder against a leaseholder. I am sharing my experience on the Abolish Leasehold website, I aim to highlight the real and often hidden abuse that leaseholders can endure at the hands of unscrupulous freeholders.

Mar House, a 7-storey building with nearly 100 flats in North West London, serves as a stark example of the flaws inherent in the current leasehold system. The building has experienced a cascade of systemic issues: from maladministration and questionable financial practices to outright legal violations. Leaseholders faced exaggerated service charge demands, with some bills reaching an astonishing £99,000 per annum per flat. The building’s balance sheets inaccurately claim millions...

Here's my email to the MP candidate Ameet Jogia, sent just before the Elections of 04 July.
I never received a response.

Dear Mr. Jogia,

I received your leaflet in my mailbox and wanted to express some opinions on some important matters to me and ask you some questions in regards to your bid to represent me.

For me, and for many others, especially in London, deep leasehold reform i...

“A Dream”

It was supposed to be a dream come true. It was 2015 and I was buying my apartment. I was very aware that this “purchase” is a purchase of a fixed term – something like a long term rent, even if for 999 years. I didn’t like the fact that the contract called me a ‘tenant’ and I have a landlord. Just like until recently when I was renting a flat in London.

To some people, like some of my colleagues, t...
